2008 Homearama Charity House has special namesake
When Conner Glenn Snead was born three weeks early on December 3, 1993, he looked like most other babies. But his mom, Amber Styron, soon noticed he wasn’t developing like the other babies.

The house will be on display during the 2008 Homearama at the Wilshire Village of Ashville Park in Virginia Beach in October. |
At nine months, when Conner still wasn’t sitting up or crawling, his pediatrician recommended a visit to a neurologist at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, which eventually led to Conner’s diagnosis of a rare genetic disorder, partial trisomy 18.
Styron explains, “Conner has an extra piece of the 18th chromosome attached to every cell in his body, which has resulted in lots of different problems for him.”
These problems, such as a terrible bout of pneumonia at the age of two, required weeks of intensive care and treatment at CHKD’s facilities. Today, Conner sees CHKD doctors who specialize in pulmonary medicine, gastroenterology, endocrinology, dermatology, rehabilitation and developmental pediatrics.
“He has had multiple surgeries, X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, EEGs, lab tests and more physical therapy sessions than I can count,” said Styron. “And I don’t count. I would do whatever it takes to help him and feel very grateful that CHKD and its network of specialists have always been right here, so close to home, with the care and support he needs to live his life to the fullest.”
When Homearama builder Herb Watson of The Walters Company Inc. came into Monarch Bank seeking financing for the 2008 TBA Charity House, fate brought him to see Styron.
As first vice president and real estate officer for Monarch Bank, she immediately planned to help make this home a reality. When Watson heard about her son, he offered to name the home in his honor.
All proceeds from the sale of this 5,100 square-foot French Chateau home will be donated to CHKD to help its future treatment of children like Conner.
“We’ve had our own children at the hospital and I know what the hospital has meant to Amber and her son these past 14 years,” said Watson. He continued, “Our children are our dreamers, and what better way to help our children than to give them the care they need and the opportunity to dream and experience the joy that surrounds them.”
In April, Conner had the opportunity to become the guest of honor at the bricklaying dedication for the home that bears his name.
“He has touched so many people and brought so much joy to the world. He is truly a miracle child,” boasts Stryon. “We are so proud that the 2008 TBA Charity House will be sponsored in part by Monarch Bank and benefit the hospital that has played such a big role in Conner’s remarkable story.”
