| Virginia Beach theme house reflects natural surroundings
The Virginia Beach House at Homearama captures the beach theme with dolphins, coral and every shade of blue imaginable. Throw in a 290-gallon saltwater aquarium featuring colorful varieties of topical fish and a dining room mural of the horizon over the ocean and you’ve got the makings of a house designed to reflect life at the beach.
“I call it ‘glitzy’ beach, not cottage-y beach,” says Connie Bussey, of Creations by Connie, the designer tasked with bringing the theme to life. For instance, Bussey has chosen a crystal and saffire chandelier for over the kitchen island to correspond with the blue granite countertop, imported from Italy.
The walls are painted to be translucent and give the feel of flowing water. The fireplace mantel is coral. The master bath features etched glass of jumping dolphins. The chandelier in the foyer features a coral basket made of crystal.
The blue color scheme comes not just from the water and sky, but also from the home’s framing, which you won’t be able to see. It’s a new technology called Bluwood, a coating that repels water, mold and mildew, and wood-eating insects such as termites.
For the library, Bussey plans a nautical theme. She is also working with city staff to feature framed photos of the city’s historic homes.
Outside you’ll see one of the city’s signature dolphin statuary. It is one of over 130 currently on display throughout the city. Funds from the sale of the dolphins benefit the Virginia Aquarium stranding team and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
