Feature homes offer Special Inspiration

Homearama builders have been hard at work the past several months bringing creative and innovative themes into their showcase homes, which will be on display from Oct. 15-30 at Tidewater Builders Association’s Fall Homearama, presented by TowneBank at The Riverfront at Harbour View in Suffolk.

The event will feature nine fully furnished, decorated and landscaped homes offering the latest in home design, technology and innovation. Many of the builders are also offering an extra dose of ingenuity with special themes:

Here are the theme homes to look for:

The Justin Kauflin House
The Justin Kauflin House: The Charity House to benefit the TBA Scholarship Foundation is being built by Michael Newsome and Lee Ward of Clark Whitehill Enterprises. It will feature the story and the music of a Justin Kauflin, a blind scholarship recipient from 2004 who is now enjoying success as a professional jazz pianist. In keeping with the educational theme, Hampton Roads design students are competing for a chance to have their design used in an area of the home.  The TBA Scholarship Foundation has awarded more than 1.6 million to more than 400 students since it was founded in 1965.

Get Pink with Sentara
Think pink! This house, built by ABT Custom Homes, encourages breast cancer awareness by celebrating women who have battled this disease. Builder Chip Iuliano, designer Beth Gilbert and the home’s owner, breast cancer survivor Michelle Buonfigli, have teamed up with Sentara to spotlight the importance of breast health. Since information is key to improving overall health, Sentara will host a variety of educational and prevention activities at the house and in their booth throughout the show.

“Pink Day,” is set for Thursday, Oct. 20, when anyone wearing pink gets a $2 discount at the gate. Sentara will offer free cholesterol and blood pressure screenings at the house, free chair massages, and healthy cooking demonstrations. For convenience of busy women, the Sentara Mobile Mammography van will be on site Wednesday, Oct. 19, from noon to 9 p.m. Women should register in advance for mobile mammography appointments by calling 1-800-Sentara.

The Treasure Chest: The Organizational House sponsored by The Closet Factory
Custom builder Sam Cohen of Joey Corp. and The Closet Factory teamed up to bring the most organized house to date to Homearama. The home will showcase storage solutions and innovations from The Closet Factory. To top it off, there’s a treasure, whether a compartmentalized vanity drawer or a planting station in the garage, to be discovered in every room!

The Social Media House
Built by Sasser Construction Inc., the house will feature educational programming on social media by Damien Smith of Guerilla Social Media and his staff. Classes on “Facebook Awareness and Safety for Parents” will be offered each day, as well as question and answer sessions about Facebook facts and myths. Sessions on “Facebook for Business” will be held on Realtors Day, Wed., Oct. 19.

The Pilot Reader House
Built by Stephen Alexander Homes, this house features reader-inspired ideas in the children’s room, the landscaping and the outdoor area. Readers were asked what they looked for in their home. From there, the builders offered three areas for the readers to choose the home’s outcomes via online votes. The outcome is a house that combines Southern hospitality and everyday comforts designed for today’s needs and lifestyles.

The Suffolk House
Journey through the city of Suffolk at the Tribute to the City of Suffolk: The 19th Hole built by Les Ore Construction Co. Inc. The home will celebrate the host city with décor and activities throughout the show. Photos and accessories will showcase Suffolk and its growth from artwork from its historic movie theaters to the greens of its numerous golf courses, to name a few. Suffolk Public Schools Day on Saturday, Oct. 22, will feature performances from Suffolk choral and band students in the center island park throughout the afternoon.

The WAVY-TV 10 House
Built by Charlie Anderson of Charlie Anderson General Contractor Building Inc., this home will be featured on the Hampton Roads’ Show, formerly of Fox 43, on WAVY-TV 10. Additionally, WAVY-TV 10 personalities will be on hand to sign autographs and meet Homearama visitors at the house on Saturday, Oct. 22.
